I have been working with GIS since 1987. Prior to starting my own business in 2004, I was GIS coordinator for a town in southern Maine. This means that I not only have the technical skills necessary to implement GIS but also have experience in working with small organizations with diverse GIS needs and sometimes differing ideas about how GIS should be implemented. GIS, Mapping, and Related Services: GIS Consulting: As an outside consultant, I can take a fresh look at the GIS resources that your organization already has and conduct a formal or informal survey of end user needs to come up with a GIS strategy that best meets staff or client expectations. Implementing GIS and Mapping: Once attainable goals have been established, priorities set, and budgets developed for a GIS project, the next step involves creating the GIS components. Creating a spatial database for GIS usually involves scanning and digitizing points, lines and areas from existing paper maps, converting existing CAD files to GIS format, or finding GIS data that may be available from various levels of government or from private firms. Usually the bulk of the cost of creating a GIS, other than the actual hardware and software components, is the cost of creating GIS spatial data. Typically, the cost increases as the requirement for higher accuracy and precision increases. However, using state-of-the-art GIS software, and with low overhead and many years of experience, I can keep the cost of developing GIS spatial data reasonable while still ensuring precision and accuracy tolerances are maintained. Digital Mapping and Data Retrieval: GIS makes it possible to pick points, lines or areas on a digital map and have any data associated with that picked entity show on the screen. I can develop routines that will make this possible. Depending on your needs, this could be a very low cost solution using free viewing software or it could be a more elaborate solution using ESRI ArcView or similar applications. One of the great things about GIS is the ability to create presentation, administration, and reference mapping based on information that is linked to the GIS spatial data. And if the linked data changes, the map can be made to change right along with it. I can create for you visually pleasing and informative maps using GIS, CAD, or a combination of the two. Also, I can develop routines that enable you to create customized mapping products. Likewise, I can instruct you on how to use the built-in capabilities in most applications to create maps. Data Conversion, Databases and Spreadsheets: I can work with your data to provide spreadsheet tables and charts, GIS linkable databases or relational databases for complex queries and reporting. Converting data from one application to be used in another application is often a complex, one-time operation. I have the tools and experience to make that conversion as economical as possible. TOP
